Kisspeptin is a natural substance that helps your brain control reproductive hormones. These hormones play a role in puberty, egg and sperm production, and the release of testosterone and oestrogen.
Researchers are studying whether kisspeptin could help with certain fertility problems and low sex drive. Early human studies have produced promising findings, but its potential benefits depend on the condition being studied and the form of kisspeptin used.
This guide explains what kisspeptin does, what the research shows and which questions remain unanswered.
What Is Kisspeptin?
Kisspeptin is a peptide, which means it is made from a short chain of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks your body uses to make proteins and many chemical messengers.
Your body makes kisspeptin naturally. In the brain, it helps start the signals that control reproductive functions.
A simple way to think about kisspeptin is as a messenger that tells the reproductive hormone system to get moving. It does not supply testosterone or oestrogen directly. Instead, it helps the body release the signals involved in making these hormones.
How Does Kisspeptin Work?
Kisspeptin starts a series of messages between the brain and the reproductive organs:
- Kisspeptin activates certain cells in the brain.
- These cells release a messenger called GnRH.
- GnRH tells a small gland beneath the brain to release LH and FSH.
- LH and FSH send signals to the ovaries or testes.
These signals help control testosterone and oestrogen production, egg development, ovulation and sperm production.
Scientists call this connected system the HPG axis. In everyday language, it is the communication system between the brain and the reproductive organs.
The Hormone Names Explained Simply
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| GnRH | A brain signal that starts the next stage of reproductive hormone release. |
| LH | A hormone involved in testosterone production and the release of an egg. |
| FSH | A hormone involved in egg development and sperm production. |
| Testosterone and oestrogen | Hormones involved in reproductive health and other body functions. |
Kisspeptin helps regulate this system, but that does not mean taking extra kisspeptin will improve every hormone-related problem.
Kisspeptin-10 vs Kisspeptin-54: What Is the Difference?
You may see two names when reading about kisspeptin:
- Kisspeptin-10: contains 10 amino acids.
- Kisspeptin-54: contains 54 amino acids.
Both can activate the kisspeptin receptor—the part of a cell that receives its message. However, their behaviour in the body differs, including how long they remain active.
Many of the best-known fertility and sex-drive studies used kisspeptin-54. Kisspeptin-10 has also been studied in humans, particularly for its effects on reproductive hormone release. Results from one form should not automatically be treated as proven benefits of the other.
What Are the Potential Benefits of Kisspeptin?
The main areas of research are reproductive hormones, fertility treatment and sexual desire.
| Potential benefit | What studies suggest | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Stimulating reproductive hormones | Kisspeptin can increase hormone signals such as LH and FSH. | Whether this produces lasting health improvements. |
| Supporting egg maturation during IVF | Kisspeptin-54 has helped eggs mature in clinical studies. | How it compares with other treatments across different patients. |
| Stimulating weak hormone signals in some women with missing periods | Studies have shown increased reproductive hormone release. | Whether treatment reliably restores periods, ovulation and fertility. |
| Helping people with low sexual desire | Small studies found changes in sexual responses and some measures of arousal. | Whether benefits last during everyday use. |
These are specific research findings, rather than a general promise that kisspeptin improves hormones, fertility or sex drive for everyone.
Does Kisspeptin Increase Testosterone?
Kisspeptin increased testosterone in some short-term human studies.
In a small study involving six men, kisspeptin-54 increased LH, FSH and testosterone compared with a placebo. This showed that kisspeptin can stimulate the signals involved in testosterone production.
However, a temporary increase during a monitored experiment does not prove that kisspeptin:
- Keeps testosterone higher over months or years.
- Improves energy, strength or muscle growth.
- Treats every cause of low testosterone.
- Can replace established treatment.
The useful distinction is between raising a blood-test result briefly and producing a lasting improvement in health. The early hormone studies demonstrate the first more clearly than the second.
Can Kisspeptin Help with Fertility?
Fertility treatment is one of the most developed areas of kisspeptin research.
Helping Eggs Mature During IVF
During IVF, eggs need to mature before they can be collected and fertilised in a laboratory.
In a 2014 study involving 53 women, researchers used kisspeptin-54 to trigger egg maturation. The treatment was followed by successful fertilisation, pregnancies and live births.
Kisspeptin was one part of a complete IVF treatment programme. The findings do not mean that kisspeptin alone can treat infertility.
Could It Make IVF Safer?
Some fertility treatments can cause the ovaries to respond too strongly. This complication is called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, or OHSS.
A 2015 study investigated kisspeptin-54 in 60 women at high risk of OHSS. Egg maturation occurred in 95% of participants, and no moderate, severe or critical OHSS was observed.
These results support further research into kisspeptin as a potentially safer egg-maturation trigger. They do not prove that it removes all risk.
What About Male Fertility?
Because kisspeptin influences hormones involved in testicular function, researchers are interested in possible applications in male reproductive health.
However, increasing LH, FSH or testosterone does not automatically demonstrate improved sperm quality or a higher chance of pregnancy. Those outcomes need to be measured directly.
Can Kisspeptin Help with Missing Periods?
Researchers have studied kisspeptin in women with hypothalamic amenorrhoea.
This means periods have stopped because the brain is sending weaker reproductive hormone signals. It can occur in situations involving insufficient energy intake, heavy exercise or stress.
Studies found that kisspeptin could stimulate reproductive hormones in these women, including increasing the frequency of LH signals.
However, the response can change with repeated exposure. In one study, the hormone response weakened during repeated administration—a process called desensitisation.
This helps explain why kisspeptin cannot be described simply as a way to “restart” the reproductive system. The cause of the missing periods and the treatment conditions matter.
Can Kisspeptin Improve Sex Drive?
Small human studies suggest that kisspeptin may influence sexual desire and arousal.
This research involves people with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD. In simple terms, this means persistently low sexual desire that causes distress.
Research in Women
In a randomised trial, 32 premenopausal women completed study visits involving kisspeptin-54 and a placebo.
Researchers found changes in how the brain responded to sexual images and attraction-related information.
The findings were encouraging, but the study mainly examined short-term brain responses. It did not establish lasting improvements in sexual desire during everyday life.
Research in Men
A trial involving 32 men with HSDD found that kisspeptin changed sexual brain responses and increased penile swelling during sexual stimulation.
Some questionnaire measures also improved, including how participants felt about sex.
These findings support further research, but they do not establish kisspeptin as a reliable long-term treatment for low libido or erectile dysfunction.
Are These Effects Just Caused by Testosterone?
The sexual-desire studies investigated brain activity as well as hormone responses. This suggests that researchers are exploring a broader role for kisspeptin in sexual processing, beyond simply raising testosterone.
An earlier study in healthy men also found changes in brain responses to sexual and couple-bonding images.
What Do We Know About Kisspeptin Side Effects and Safety?
Some small human trials reported that kisspeptin was well tolerated during the study period. For example, the female sexual-desire trial reported no side effects.
However, short-term tolerability does not establish long-term safety. Small studies may miss uncommon problems, and brief experiments cannot answer every question about repeated use.
The research also shows that repeated exposure can reduce the hormone response under some conditions. This is another reason the effects cannot be predicted simply from an initial hormone increase.
Results from carefully monitored clinical studies do not establish the safety or effectiveness of a research-use product for personal treatment.
What Is the Latest Research Exploring?
Researchers are investigating different ways to deliver kisspeptin and target its pathway.
A 2025 study found that kisspeptin delivered through the nose could stimulate reproductive hormone release in healthy volunteers and women with hypothalamic amenorrhoea.
This is an interesting development because nasal delivery could be easier to use than some experimental injection methods. However, the study measured hormone responses; it did not demonstrate improved pregnancy rates or lasting improvements in sex drive.
Other studies are examining specially developed compounds that activate the kisspeptin receptor. These compounds should be discussed separately from kisspeptin-10 and kisspeptin-54 because their effects can differ.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kisspeptin
What is kisspeptin used for in research?
Kisspeptin is studied for its role in reproductive hormone release, egg maturation during IVF, certain reproductive disorders and low sexual desire. Researchers are also exploring possible diagnostic uses.
Is kisspeptin a hormone or a peptide?
It is both. Peptide describes its structure, while hormone describes its role as a chemical messenger in the body.
Does the body make kisspeptin naturally?
Yes. Your body makes kisspeptin naturally, including in parts of the brain involved in reproductive hormone control. It is also produced in the placenta during pregnancy.
Does kisspeptin boost testosterone?
It has increased testosterone in some short-term studies in men. That does not establish that it produces lasting improvements or treats all causes of low testosterone.
Can kisspeptin increase female sex drive?
A small study found changes in sexual brain responses in women with distressing low desire. Larger and longer studies are needed to establish whether this leads to lasting improvements.
Does kisspeptin help with erectile dysfunction?
One study in men with low sexual desire found increased penile swelling during sexual stimulation. This is promising early evidence, but it does not prove effectiveness for erectile dysfunction generally.
Can kisspeptin improve fertility?
Kisspeptin-54 has helped trigger egg maturation during IVF, with pregnancies and live births reported. These findings apply to a specific medical treatment setting and do not establish that kisspeptin alone improves fertility.
Is kisspeptin-10 the same as kisspeptin-54?
No. They are related forms with different lengths. Both can stimulate the kisspeptin receptor, but findings from one form should not automatically be applied to the other.
How quickly does kisspeptin work?
Researchers have measured hormone changes during short study sessions. However, a rapid hormone response does not tell us how quickly—or whether—someone would experience meaningful improvements in fertility or sexual desire.
Does more kisspeptin mean better results?
No. Some studies found that repeated exposure made the body less responsive. The form used, the person’s condition and the pattern of exposure all influence the response.
